About My Art

I am an impressionist oil painter and continue to explore a variety of subject matter. Whether I am painting the busy streets of Chicago, a bucolic midwest farm scene, or an interior still life - most have one commonality, a strong architectural element, due in part to my studies years ago in architectural rendering.

My still life paintings are an exploration between shapes, color and pattern, where everyday objects are rendered in a flat, graphic way. Furniture and structural details help to create a dialogue between the objects and the space they occupy, and many times I use pattern to weave it all together. A window, almost always present in my still life paintings, indicates life beyond, yet serves to emphasize everyday objects on the tabletops. My goal is to create a space where architecture and still life merge, drawing attention to structure and abstraction, inviting the viewer to experience a familiar, yet transformed visual language.

My recent landscape paintings, rendered in a more realistic manner, explore the interplay of light and structure within two distinct yet deeply interconnected landscapes: the bustling Chicago urban environment and the serene open spaces of Midwest farms. Through my art, my goal is to capture the essence of these places, focusing on light and its transformative effects on the architectural elements and their surroundings. In the city scenes, I aim to portray the energy of the city and the rhythm of urban life. Conversely, my farm scenes celebrate the simplicity and enduring beauty of rural life. Whether a city scene or rural scene, each represents a moment in time, when light affects colors, values and shapes in a captivating way and my hope is to convey a sense of nostalgia and connection to these places with the viewer.
